From the moment you see it, the grandeur of the Baiturrahman Mosque in Banda Aceh immediately captivates. Its architecture is a harmonious blend of various styles, including Mughal from India, Moorish from Spain, and European influences, reflecting its long history.
Iconic Black Domes: Seven black domes made of hardwood shingles are its main feature, contrasting with the pristine white walls.
Towering Minarets: Several towering minarets surrounding the mosque add elegance and serve as visual landmarks from afar.
Marble Courtyard & Electric Umbrellas: The mosque's modern facade is greeted by a vast white marble courtyard. The mosque is equipped with 12 giant electric umbrellas identical to those found in the Prophet's Mosque in Medina. When these umbrellas are unfurled, they create a shady and majestic atmosphere, and are a favorite photo spot for visitors.
A Long History: From the Sultanate to the Colonial Period
This mosque was first built during the era of the Aceh Darussalam Sultanate and has gone through various phases of destruction and reconstruction. One of the most dramatic moments was when the mosque was burned by Dutch colonial forces in 1873, sparking the Aceh War. As an apology and an attempt to calm public anger, the Dutch rebuilt the mosque in 1879. It was rebuilt with a more magnificent design, which became the forerunner of its current form.
Silent Witness to the Tsunami of December 26, 2004
This is the story that makes the Baiturrahman Grand Mosque so special in the eyes of the world. When a devastating tsunami devastated Banda Aceh in 2004, flattening almost every building in the surrounding area, this mosque, by God's grace, stood strong amidst the waves' fury.
Shelter: This mosque miraculously became a refuge for thousands seeking higher ground to escape the flood.
Symbol of Hope: Amidst total destruction, the mosque's presence stands as a symbol of hope, the resilience of faith, and tangible proof of the greatness of the Creator. For the people of Aceh, it is a reminder that even in the midst of the darkest tragedy, faith will always provide strength.
Today, after being beautifully renovated and expanded, the Baiturrahman Grand Mosque serves not only as a center of worship but also as a must-visit religious tourism destination. Walk on its cool marble floors and feel the breeze beneath its giant umbrellas. Moreover, simply sitting quietly in its solemn prayer hall is a calming experience.
These days, this mosque is busy with tourists joining the Medan tour package combining with overland Medan Sabang Tour Package before leaving Banda Aceh. Tourists usually stop by the mosque first. Besides exploring the area, they also join in congregational prayers during Dhuhr and Asr.
