How Are Manufacturers to Prepare for Conveyor System Automation Expansion?
Typically, production demands will not always stay the same. The manufacturer can speed up production processes, bring new products to the market, install extra processing equipment or change the layout of the manufacturing facility. All these factors can influence the work of the conveyor system and require additional equipment or new flow lines.
If there is no scalable control architecture, such modifications will be hard to implement. Thus, when planning conveyor system automation, it is important to consider not just the current demands but also the possibilities for future expansion.
To start with, the manufacturer should check such aspects as the controller capacity, number of I/O, communication, drive compatibility, sensors integration and diagnostic capabilities of the control system. These aspects will define how easy it will be to add additional conveyor segments or automation equipment.
Another aspect worth considering is the interaction between new equipment and existing devices. For example, additional conveyor zones might have to coordinate speeds, products' accumulation, starts and stops, and processing.
Future growth will not necessitate making accurate predictions about how the plant will look in the next few years. What must be done is to avoid placing too many limitations on oneself at the present time.
